Howard University Gospel Choir - The original members got together at the 2019/20 50th HGC Anniversary Celebration
As a Howard Gospel Choir (HGC) alumnus, recently I had the pleasure and honor of singing with the present HGC at the Kennedy Center, Washington, DC where we celebrated the musical legacy of Richard Smallwood on his 75th year and all that he has contributed to Gospel Music.
While at the Kennedy Center celebration young newer members of the choir were asking me – what was it like to be in the choir during those early years when it first started – where did you travel? how was the choir formed? – what made HGC so special as it is today? I was enlightened to see new members really want to know so much about the history of the choir.
At the 50th HGC celebration in 2019/2020 Richard Smallwood invited the original (early years) members to his house for an informal dinner-get-together. Thank-you Richard for being so gracious. I had my camera and recorded the evening of talk with everyone sharing memories and feelings of those early years and what the choir meant to us all. Even though we are talking about 50 years ago – it is like we just saw each other yesterday. You must remember back then we did not have internet, cellphones, computers, etc. All we had back then was a telephone and regular mail service. But we still have that strong “HU – You Know” bond.
Please enjoy this two part this video celebration. PS, you will not see me, Frankie Jordan, in the video because I am behind the camera. In my family this is one of those rare moments when the elders get together and you would say – I wish I had my camera to record this – “It is Golden.” Well this was a golden Howard Gospel Choir moment.
Thank you to all involved – stay blessed…
